FAYETTEVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA — After New River Gorge National River became America’s newest national park and preserve in a Covid-relief bill passed at the end of 2020, some area businesses saw an economic boom.

After a lengthy discussion, the Madison County Quorum Court voted Monday night to hire a new juvenile probation officer requested by Fourth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Stacy Zimmerman and, separately, added evidence technician to the duties of an administrative assistant at the Madison County Sheriff’s Office as requested by Sheriff Ronnie Boyd. The court discussed a number of ways of fitting – and justifying – the proposed salaries of each position into the 2023 budget, which closes next month.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Lighting of the Square on Friday. Having been a resident of Huntsville only for  about four months, I can say that I was again surprised by the togetherness and community spirit shown at a public gathering.

Richard Dean Coleman, 74 of Huntsville, passed away late Friday evening, Nov. 17, 2023, peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones.

Ronald Stephen Mounce, 70, of Delaney, passed away Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, at his home.  

Larry was born March 12, 1945 in Little Rock, Ark. to the late Harrel and Norma Chancellor. 

FAYETTEVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA — New River Gorge became the nation’s second national river in 1978, its’ designation following the country’s first national river established in 1972: Arkansas’ Buffalo National River.

Last Tuesday night, the Lady Eagles continued play in the Clarksville Tip-Off Classic losing to Morrilton 28-62.

Party filing for all Democratic and Republican offices (including nonpartisan filings) ended at noon on Tuesday.

The Huntsville City Council adopted an ordinance amending codes pertaining to animals within the city limits during its regular meeting Monday night.

Though the fund is not required by law to be repaid, a majority of Madison County justices of the peace voted on Nov. 6 to require the Solid Waste and Recycling Department to replenish Local Assistance and Tribal Consistency Fund (LATC) in the amount of $123,355 in order to secure the purchase of a new roll-off truck for the department.

The Elkins Elks remain undefeated this season with a perfect 11-0 record after toppling Clinton in a home playoff game Friday, 63-27.

The City of Huntsville along with Madison County is launching a new mass notification system called Huntsville Madison County Alerts, powered by Genasys, Inc. The new system will go live at 9 a.m. Friday and replaces Code Red for the city.

The Arkansas legislature has tried to apply lessons learned by other states when it enacted school safety laws over the past several years.
