The Madison County Quorum Court voted unanimously on Monday night to request an ordinance containing “ballot language” for a 1 cent sales tax increase for the operation and maintenance of the new county jail and for that ordinance to be ready for a vote at the court’s next regular meeting in August or during a specially-called meeting before then.

An after-hours clinic and Saturday hours at Madison County Medical Clinic has not drawn quite the numbers that were hoped for or expected in a trial run that began in March.

The Madison County Quorum Court tabled discussion of a sales tax to fund the new county jail and sheriff’s office until the July meeting, by which time County Judge Larry Garrett, County Clerk Austin Boatright and Sheriff Ronnie Boyd should have an accurate sense of how much it will cost to operate the jail on a per-bed basis.

The Huntsville City Council on Monday agreed to have a resolution drawn up for its next meeting that will establish a tiered schedule of discounts on building permits that will be offered to homebuilders.

The National Weather Service in Tulsa confirmed an EF1 tornado struck Clifty at 2:15 a.m. on May 26, causing significant damage to homes and other structures in the area. Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Friday announced that President Joe Biden has approved the state’s Major Disaster Declaration request, which “will allow us to have a significant increase in resources to communities impacted by the storms.”

A thunderstorm containing high winds swept through northern Madison County early Sunday, toppling trees and causing widespread property damage in Clifty and Forum. Withrow Springs State Park is also temporarily closed as a result of damage. Clifty was without power as of Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service has yet to make a determination as to whether the storm contained any tornadoes.

Though pleased with progress made in the construction of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Facility, County Judge Larry Garrett said it is “crunch time” regarding any new tax that would pay for the operation and maintenance of the jail — a tax the quorum court will almost certainly ask the voters for in November.

Huntsville Mayor Travis Dotson had a message for the employees of Ducommun during a luncheon on May 8 celebrating the company’s 175 years of continuous operation: “If you’re not familiar with Ducommun, you’re not familiar with Huntsville, Arkansas.”

The Huntsville School Board voted unanimously to hire a search firm to aid in the search for a new superintendent. At a special board meeting on Monday, the board hired McPherson & Jacobson, LLC, a national firm represented by Dr. Kieth Williams.

Students and parents in the Huntsville School District are familiarizing themselves with a new School Resource Officer with the hiring of Michael Henson, who started working with Huntsville Sgt. Chuck Melton on the campuses last week.

The City of Huntsville looks forward to completing a large project at the newly-christened College Street Park, where a splash pad and restrooms will be installed later this year thanks in part to a grant from the State of Arkansas. However, a second, somewhat smaller park project waits around the corner following a land donation from developer Terry Presley, who is building homes in his Highland Park subdivision on Missouri Street.

The City of Huntsville held its annual Cleanup Day on Saturday, tackling various areas around the city where litter seemed to be a problem.

Huntsville’s 1-cent sales tax will expire on June 30, said Mayor Travis Dotson. “Everything that tax was intended to do has been accomplished,” he said.

The budget and personnel committees of the Madison County Quorum Court met Monday to decide on a request made by Sheriff Ronnie Boyd at the court’s March 18 meeting to add one sergeant’s position and seven new corporal’s positions to his department.

Earlene England marked her 50th year with Arvest Bank Huntsville (formerly First National Bank), becoming the fourth-longest tenured  associate in the bank’s four-state coverage area. England modestly declares it’s “not that big a deal,” ascribing her achievement to a strong lifelong work ethic.

The Huntsville School District will have a four-day school week next year after the Huntsville School Board approved the change in a 5-1 vote. Board President Whitney Comer voted against the motion and Board Member Natalie Swafford was absent.
