At our spring plant sales in Huntsville, elderberry continues to be one of the best sellers, just behind tomato and pepper plants. Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is the dark purple berry of the European or black elder tree, which grows in Europe, North America, western Asia, and north Africa. Some varieties are self-pollinating, but most are not. A good berry crop requires at least two plants spaced 50-60 feet apart.
