Cha Cha Cha Changes

Posted

Well, parents and students have officially survived our first 4-day school week within the Huntsville School District.

How’d you fare?

For our family the adjustment has actually been pretty easy, because my boys are older. And while they aren’t usually fond of change, like at all, they’ve enjoyed this one - so far.

They’re both in high school this year and the 4:30 p.m. dismissal just means less time at mom’s office. Well, in principle it means that, but they’re newspaper kids, so in reality it rarely means that. But they’re good with that, too.

You’ve probably noticed some changes here at MCR too. For instance, you’re reading a column from me again - two weeks in a row.

This week you’ll see most of our news stories are from another familiar name, Rod Harrington. It’s true he’s back, but only for a couple of weeks.

Much like HSD, this is a transitional year for The Record too. We are welcoming a new editor to the paper and to our community.

Mark Humphrey will take the reins of our community’s written history in a couple of weeks. I think you’ll come to enjoy his writing and his heart for community journalism.  He brings a lifetime of newspaper knowledge with him and a passion for sports some would say rivals that of Rod’s and Huntsville’s own Scott Thomas. He, too, was a play-by-play announcer in a past life and I know he’ll do us all proud.

Change is hard. It’s scary and exciting. But I’ve come to see change as an opportunity for growth and sometimes it lends itself to be the perfect time for reevaluation.

So while bylines may change, and the faces you see at city council, quorum court or the Friday night football game may be different than what you’ve seen before, rest assured The Record holds tight to our history. And our promise to deliver news and stories that matter most to our community stays the same- week after week. We’ll be here just like we have since 1879.
