Tom Shrum, a farmer and co-owner of the Madison County Telephone and Cable Company, died Saturday in Fayetteville. He was 80.

ST. PAUL - The town of St. Paul officially has a new mayor and is now seeking a new city council member after Ron Springston, who has been acting mayor since May, was appointed mayor during the regular council meeting on Sept. 12. 

Huntsville Police responded to a one-vehicle accident at the corner of East Dogwood Drive and Dogwood Street Friday at approximately 12:20 p.m.

Huntsville firefighters responded to a report of a fire at O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday afternoon around 1:30 p.m.

The Madison County Quorum Court took a step toward making a new county jail a reality Monday night by approving an ordinance authorizing a bond purchase agreement with Stephens, Inc., that will fund construction of the facility beginning in November. The court unanimously voted in favor of the ordinance after its third reading by title only.

A softball tournament on Saturday, Sept. 23 will benefit Zach tenBerge, a beloved Huntsville native and basketball coach who has been battling a rare genetic disorder for most of his life.

St. Paul Mayor Linda Lewis, who stepped aside in May and appointed Ron Springston as acting mayor, said she intended to resign the mayoral position at Tuesday night’s specially called meeting. 

Huntsville Mayor Travis Dotson received approval from the city council Monday night to form a committee to study ways to “promote growth” within the city, which could include providing such incentives as a building permit “holiday” to home builders.

The Huntsville City Council voted Monday night to purchase an acre of land at the airport for $100,000 for the construction of one hangar and potentially four more if the city follows through on a “step-by-step” plan to buy three more acres from landowner Charles Coger.

The Huntsville School District’s 2023-2024 Fiscal Year Budget received Huntsville School Board approval during the board’s regular August meeting Monday night.

Brennen Cline Machacek, of Hindsville, is asking a court to allow him to serve his sentence through community service and probation after he pled guilty to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating or picketing a government building on Jan. 6, 2021. 

An Elkins man facing numerous Madison County charges, including third-degree domestic battery, kidnapping and fleeing, bonded out of the Carroll County Jail Aug. 30 only to be arrested again in a separate incident one day later.

A passing zone on Highway 412 in the Marble area has been closed after the Arkansas Department of Transportation reviewed crash data for the zone, according to department’s maintenance division.

While most Huntsville School District students enjoyed a summer off, some enjoyed extended learning through the summer as part of the summer garden club. 

Eddie Todd, vice-president of Arkansas Farmers Union, said his organization is seeing what can be done on a state and national level to assist Northwest Arkansas poultry growers whose production contracts have been terminated by Tyson, Inc.

After an outcry by legislators and county fair volunteers upset with funding cuts, the state allotted additional funds last week, providing county fairs throughout the state with funds equivalent to last year. 

The City of Huntsville is “executing a demeanor of patience” toward the company responsible for the delay of delivery of a new fire engine purchased in 2021, said Mayor Travis Dotson.
