Virginia Sue Spicer, 94, of Huntsville, Ark., passed away peacefully on Nov. 8, 2022.

She was born to Merritt and Doris Trusty in Paris, Ark., on Sept. 20, 1928.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Greg Spicer; four sisters, Irene Whitecotton, Dana Sherrell, Helen Horne and Ella White; and three brothers, JW Trusty, Harold Trusty and Billy Trusty.

She is survived by two sons, Stan (Daronda) Spicer of Fort Smith, Ark., and Gearl (Cindy) Spicer Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; and one daughter, Phyllis (the late Bud) Pulley of Huntsville, Ark. She also has 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Virginia was a member of Haven Heights Baptist Church in Fort Smith, Ark., but has attended Huntsville Missionary Baptist Church for the last six years with her daughter.

Virginia has worked hard her entire life. She started in the cotton fields at a young age, along with helping her Dad in the hay fields. In her early adult life, Virginia lived many places while her husband, Gearl Spicer Sr., served in the U.S. Army. She owned Virginia’s Café for over 20 years in Fort Smith. She was well known for her biscuits & gravy and homemade pies. Her family enjoyed her home cooking as well.

When she lived in Fort Smith, she was so proud of her garden, yard and flowers. She was the recipient of Mayor Ray Baker’s Yard of the Month award. She loved birds, bird houses, jigsaw puzzles, and the St. Louis Cardinals. She had a good, long life. She leaves behind a legacy of love and family.

Services were conducted by her son, Rev. Gearl D. Spicer Jr., and oldest grandchild, Rev. Johnny Dean Spicer. 

Pallbearers were Jeremy Spicer, Patrick Pulley, Caleb Spicer, Gregory Spicer, Jonathan Phillips and Travis Watkins. 

Honorary pallbearers were Johnny Spicer, Corey Spicer, John Paul Sherrell, Tommy White, Roger Trusty, Eddie Conkle and Robert Reyes.

The funeral service was held on Friday, Nov. 11, at Haven Heights Baptist Church in Fort Smith, followed by burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
