A new outdoor weather station and alert system for the Huntsville School District will take the guess work out of deciding when to call off games, recess, or other outdoor activities due to weather. 

Bids for the new Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center were opened and read aloud to the public on Oct. 4 at the Madison County Courthouse. About 25 contractors sat in the courtroom to hear the bids read on each of the project’s 23 packages.

The Huntsville City Council worked through a lengthy agenda in its regular meeting Monday night, hearing the first reading of an ordinance fixing higher water and sewer rates beginning in 2024 and hearing from Madison County’s Department of Emergency Management coordinator on a once-in-a-lifetime total eclipse that will occur in April 2024.

All full-time, contracted employees at the Huntsville School District will receive a $1,000 bonus after the recommendation received Huntsville School Board approval during its regular October meeting on Monday.

On Oct. 1, the green and white 4-H flag was raised at the U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarters in Washington, D.C., where it will fly through Oct. 7 to celebrate National 4-H Week. 

Injuries prevented the Huntsville Eagles cross country teams from making much of an impact at the annual Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville on Sept. 30.

On Tuesday, Sept. 26, Huntsville’s varsity girls volleyball team lost their home conference match against Shiloh Christian High School, 0-3.

A competitive and persistent spirit keeps Huntsville High School Senior Malia Buchanan at the top of her volleyball game. Standing just under six feet tall, her height aids in her playing middle backer, setter, and outside hitter for the Lady Eagles volleyball team.

The Kingston girls’ golf team placed fourth at the Girls State Tournament at West Side Greers Ferry on Sept. 26.

The Huntsville Eagles never found their footing or the end zone Friday night, suffering a 63-0 loss to the Elkins Elks. The Eagles are now 0-2 in 4A Region 1 and 0-5 overall. With the victory, Elkins boosted its conference record to 2-0 and is 5-0 overall. Elkins now trails only first-place Gentry in conference standings, with Huntsville falling to eighth place.

The Huntsville Water Commission held a public hearing Monday night to answer any questions regarding higher water and sewer rates that will be phased in January and continuing through 2026. No citizens attended the hearing, nor did members of the Huntsville City Council. 

A Madison County jury last week took 10 minutes to find a Berryville woman guilty of felony possession of methamphetamine and 10 minutes to sentence her to six years in the Arkansas Department of Correction after she refused an offer of probation and an expunged record from the prosecuting attorney’s office.

The 16th annual Cruz’n the Square Benefit Car Show will be Saturday on Polk Square in downtown Huntsville from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizer Jason Yates said he expects as many as 80 classic cars to be displayed during the event, which will also feature food, a live auction, music and a valve cover race.

A St. Paul woman said that on the night of Sept. 12, she reported to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office a pedestrian walking on Highway 16 about two hours before he was struck and killed by a motorist in heavy fog. Sheriff Ronnie Boyd said his office had only one deputy working that night and did not respond to the report, which Boyd said did not initially indicate the pedestrian needed assistance. Boyd said the deputy did not deem the report a high priority and chose not to respond.

A coalition floating the idea of making federal lands near the Buffalo National River a national park preserve says the designation would make the area the “most active-use National Park in the country for outdoor recreation.”

The Huntsville Eagles (0-4, 0-1) take on the Elkins Elks (4-0, 1-0) tonight at John Bunch Memorial Field in Elkins with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

The Elkins Elks topped the Gravette Lions Friday night by a score of 41-20. The Elks are now 4-0 overall and hold a 4A-1 conference record of 1-0. Friday’s game was the first conference match up of the season for both teams.
