The Huntsville Planning Commission on Monday night voted to table a decision on an ordinance providing for the establishment of a flood damage prevention program. Jennifer Thomas, planning director, said Madison County is looking at “mirroring” the city’s ordinance, if and when it is approved by the planning commission.

A thunderstorm containing high winds swept through northern Madison County early Sunday, toppling trees and causing widespread property damage in Clifty and Forum. Withrow Springs State Park is also temporarily closed as a result of damage. Clifty was without power as of Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service has yet to make a determination as to whether the storm contained any tornadoes.

Madison County Judge Larry Garrett urged the quorum court on Monday night to start thinking about how much it wants to ask voters for a tax to operate and maintain the sheriff’s office and detention facility that is currently under construction and will be completed by July 2025.

The Washington/Madison County Drug Treatment Court seeks to break the revolving cycle of incarceration and addiction for defendants who run an abnormally high risk of going to prison, said Fourth Judicial Circuit Judge Cristi R. Beaumont, who presides over the court.

Ongoing projects at Withrow Springs State Park will interrupt the flow of traffic and limit access to War Eagle Creek, but Assistant Superintendent Adam Leslie said the improvements will be worthwhile.

The Huntsville City Council authorized Mayor Travis Dotson to seek bids for a security system for City Hall and passed on its third reading an ordinance allowing city employees to do limited business with the city.
