The Elkins City Council in a special session last week approved the 2023 budget, after a vote last month was tabled over the salary of new Mayor Troy Reed.

The Madison County Quorum Court held a mock meeting last Friday, with seven new justices of the peace taking their places on the court.

The Huntsville City Council on Monday approved the 2023 budget, and Mayor Travis Dotson swore in numerous people to serve on city commissions.

The $16,063,002.85 Madison County budget for 2023 includes a 5% cost-of-living adjustment for most employees, according to former County Clerk Tamitha Blocker.

Numerous municipal and county officials were sworn into office early Sunday by Madison County District Judge Dale Ramsey. The ceremony was held in the Madison County Courthouse on the first day of the new year.

A reception was held Friday for Madison County officials and employees who are retiring at the end of this year.

ST. PAUL – Things in the town of St. Paul will look a little different after several key pieces of town business were discussed at the last town council meeting of 2022. Topics included passing the 2023 budget, winning the largest grant in town history, popular events returning, and saying farewell to the mayor and a city council member.

Madison County voters approved a half-cent sales and use tax to build a jail, but voted against a 1.25% tax to maintain and operate the facility, according to unofficial results from Tuesday’s General Election.

Madison County voters on Tuesday will be asked to approve two ordinances for a new jail, and will help elect local, state and national leaders.

How to best enforce the new pet ordinance in St. Paul continues to be an issue for the St. Paul Town Council, which discussed the matter during its monthly meeting Oct. 11. 

The City of Elkins for now has decided not to purchase a new tanker truck for the fire department, according to Mayor Bruce Ledford.
