Hundreds of Huntsville residents turned out for the final First Friday held on Polk Square last week. Activities included a pumper truck from the Huntsville Fire Department spraying water on the street creating a cool, splashy environment for kids as well as adults.

The annual Madison County IPRA Rodeo drew record crowds this past weekend, according to Leslie Harp, vice president of the Madison County Rodeo Board.

The Madison County Library Board held its third-quarter meeting last week at the Madison County Courthouse and handled financial issues, heard reports from library directors, and heard concerns from the Kingston Friends of the Library.

The final First Friday of 2023 will be held on Aug. 4 on Polk Square in downtown Huntsville. The theme for Friday’s event will be Hometown Proud/Back to School.

The Huntsville Planning Commission had a brief discussion last week about the city possibly giving financial breaks to Madison County when it comes to building permits for the new jail.

The 54th Annual St. Paul Pioneer Days is approaching in just more than a month and plans are building, according to Tiffany Smith, planning committee organizer. Pioneer Days will be Sept. 8-9 in St. Paul, near the school’s complex and community center. 

An ALS fundraiser set for Saturday, Aug. 12, will celebrate the “faith, family and friends” of Lori Trinkle, a Huntsville resident who last year was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease.

The Huntsville Water and Sewer Commission on Monday approved the use of  Aerobic Granular Sludge [AGS] technology for a new wastewater treatment plant, a project estimated to cost $32.5 million. Engineers and Huntsville Water Manager Sean Davis said the total cost ultimately will be less than the estimate.

Don Smith, a longtime banker and volunteer firefighter in Huntsville, died Saturday in Hindsville. He is remembered as a steady, reliable person, a valuable member of the community and as a loving family man.

Putting fluoride in the drinking water in Madison County has been stalled due to mechanical problems and problems with a contractor having to wait on state approval for new plans at the Madison County Regional Water’s treatment plant near Beaver Lake.

The Jasper School Board did an about-face Monday night, rescinding a contract offer to a former St. Paul basketball coach for a coaching position at Oark School. It also accepted the resignation of Oark Principal Kenena Pelfrey, who recommended hiring him.
